scavenging wire

anyone scavenge their wire? re-using and using found materials whenever possible is really important to me. I've been using aluminum wire scrap that i collected off the ground of an electrical construction sight near my home...i'm running out though, and the city is about done with their re-wiring...any suggestions?

Where to buy stainless wire?

Most of the work I do uses 16g stainless, and previously I'd ordered a large chunk from theringlord.com, but shipping for that is expensive. Can anyone recommend somewhere I might buy wire locally (SF Bay area) to save on the shipping costs?

chainmail for sca fighting?

Hi - I recently have just started experimenting in making chainmail, and want to move onto making a shirt for SCA fighting. Anyone have words as to what kind of weave or rings I ought to be using to withstand some good shots from rattan (I'm be wearing a leather war-belt and leather shoulders over the chain). I've been working on a shirt for my girlfriend using 1/4 16 gauge rings in a 4 in 1 (galvinised) - her shirt is just for decorative purposes, but that seems pretty sturdy for fighting. Should I stick with the same plan for my shirt, or go down to 14 gauge, or go for a 6 in 1 (factoring in considerations of weight and amount of time to do the project) ? Any feedback would be much appreciated!

favorite pliers?

Hi :)
I am going to begin making stainless steel jewelry. Thus far i've only made maille jewelry with silver and gold, and just used some cheapo needle nosed pliers - but i definitely need to get some new ones!
Are there any types/brands of pliers that are preferrable?
What types of padding is good to add to the handles for comfort?
(I've noticed my wrists can get a bit strained after a while)

thanks!

4-in-1 bracelet with stretchy nitrile rubber rings...doing it wrong?

So, I made this pretty nifty bracelet that's stretchy because of the nitrile o-rings (thank you, Home Depot). This was my first experience making chain mail, and after putting the bracelet on....I don't like it at all.

The bracelet lays down flat if you don't DO anything, but the second I move or otherwise do anything, the rings flip up and generally don't lie down flat, and it brings out my OCD tendencies and drives me crazy.

Is this normal? Or am I Doing It Wrong? Is this just the tendency of 4-in-1? I've never actually seen one of these in person, I just sort of fudged it based on a basic 4-in-1- pattern and some eyeballing.

If this is just the nature of 4-in-1 when worn as a bracelet, fine. If there's a better (but still relatively simple, I'm a beginner!) weave that'll just lay down on my wrist and BEHAVE, please let me know.

Okay, I am in need of some advice on one of my projects I'm going to post some pictures with the same title. I was using the pouch for my ipod but I traded in the old nano for a new one that doesn't fit. I would like to sell the pouch as a coin purse but I've never sold anything before. Can you please tell me how much you think it's worth? And if you know of a good website to sell it on, eBay kinda scares me. And if you have any other comments/questions on it I would love to hear them.

Oh and I'm new to the tribe and this whole website so....HI EVERYONE :)

Can someone suggest a good site to order gold links (20g, 3/16")? A web search found some places, but I also don't know whether I should be looking at solid gold, gold filled, gold plated, etc. Anyone care to offer some advice?

Also about 10 pairs of stainless gauntlets for the Medieval Times jousters in the mid to late 80's. We had a booth there then. They lost less fingers that year : ).

100's of head dresses, bikinis, slave chains, hand flowers, etc.

Hi All! I am a dancer and have several chainmail outfits I adore. The problem is that they need to be cleaned. I was told that they are aluminum. The parts that contact fabric leave a black residue, which does not bother me, but the parts that are repeatedly in contact with my skin look like they have a white powdery residue on them. I looked online and ended up washing them in warm water with some detergent and vinegar - as suggested for aluminum. They definately look better than they did and I was amazed at how dirty the water looked when I was done, but I'd like to have them be shiny again. Any advice?

I understand the sleeves need a gusset at the elbows ( correction - I _know_ they do, the sleeves I have made stop me from bending my elbows more than 90 degrees. This is serious, as I cannot drink while wearing the shirt). Can anyone out there give me some ideas on how I do this? If not i'll just experiment and post the results :-)!

As many of you know, making armor by hand is rather labor intensive. I know that after an hour or so my hands feel like I've severe arthritis or worse. Working with a heavy gauge wire making and linking a good quality piece of chain mail takes it's toll. Has anyone found any specific exercise or other means of avoiding driving straight into the carpool tunnel lane? So to speak. In other words, any tips anyone has found to avoid things like carpal tunnel AKA chainmailers wrist?

Annodized rings?

I've been getting anodized aluminum rings from theringlord.com for a while, typically when ordering a fairly large amount of steel as well and so the shipping costs are relatively reasonable. However I was looking to get a relatively small order of ~3oz of very small rings, and the $11 shipping charge on a $15 order threw me off. Can anyone suggest an alternate source in the US for such rings?

(Don't suggest a place that's wire only, I don't have the necessary tools to make my own 20/22g 1/8" rings... which will be my next post)

Hello all,

I am interested in making a chain maille top to wear while fire spinning. I have the design in mind, but I have never done chain maille. Is there a resource book or website that would help a newbie get started?

How do you guys polish your rings, if at all? I've heard of some people using tumblers with sand. What about galvanized rings, I have some pieces made that are tarnished, and, short of wearing them, I am unsure how to polish them. Perhaps dipping it in an acidic solution?

I sincerely apologize for the absence. I would like to take this opportunity to see if there are any questions, comments or issues any of you would like to bring up in the open about this community. Any suggestions are welcome as well.

It seems to me that Chainmaille is probably the most repetitive activity imaginable. That being the case having the right tools could make a huge difference. I've been using a pair of 6" pliers from Sears. They are good but not perfect.
So, I'm asking what is your prefered tool? Have you modified it in some way?
I've found this:
http://www.chainmail.com/chainmall/cteach2.htm
The thumb loop sounds good, but it is just one man's solution. What's yours?

Thanks,

Looking for Chainmail Workshop Instructor

Would any of you be interested in coming to West Texas (of all places!) this summer to teach a Chainmail Workshop? By hook or crook, this will be a paying gig. We will also be in need of instructors in the Fall. Workshops can run a few days to a week, or two, dependent upon your needs. Please send your resume, a url to your website (if you have one), and a paragraph or two describing your workshop details, supplies you will need, etc. to: lisa@drakaarts.org

We will be based in Marfa, a lovely little town with a lot of Donald Judd in it, and the lovely national park of Big Bend just 80 miles south and oh so close to the border of ol'Mexico. And, yes, there are hot springs down the road a piece, plus the "mysterious" Marfa LIGHTS! Check out: www.marfatx.com It's a place where we can be artsy cowboys & cowgirls in the old wild west of Texas.

Artist-in-Residence Program details to be announced real soon.

Tumbles for chainmail

Ideas for do it yourself tumblers and some inexpensive cement mixers that can be used for large pieces such as armor.

http://www.gizmology.net/mixer.htm
http://www.metalsmith.org/edu/equipment/tumblers/foster.htm

If you want to buy a tumbler for chainmail armor here are some good choices. Remember to remove the blades or put a rubber covering over them. If you leave the blades of some modles in, the chainmale will tangle up around it. Look for the mixers with the flat blades.

Hello all!
I've been making maile for a couple years, most of it jewelry. I use stainless steel & sterling silver the most, but also copper, bronze and anodized aluminum, niobium & titanium. When I first started, I was cutting my own rings, but started buying them after a short while. I usually buy from Ring Lord or MetalDesignz.

Looking forward to sharing ideas & info!

And do you think this ring size will stay together relatively well for byz?

AmIPeriodOrNot is back! Perhaps some of you remember AmIPeriodOrNot.com. It was based on AmIHotOrNot.com: people would upload pics of their garb or armor and anyone could vote on how well it represented its periiod and make comments if desired. It went down a few years ago, but it's back now under new management (and a larger staff)!

Come on over and either show off your stuff or take a look around and vote. Let the wide world drool over what you can do!

We're getting ready for a show and could really use a sheet of mail, just a squarish piece about the size of a sheet of paper, about 12-14 gauge. There are plenty of sources for loose rings, but I haven't had much luck finding a source for something like this; anyone have any suggestions?
Producing small rings

I'm loathe to actually order pre-made rings, but I typically only work in larger gauges but am now attempting to do some finer work. My standard method for larger scale work is to find an appropriately sized metal dowel, cut to length, drill a hole through the dowel and then wrap the wire using a power drill.
However I want to make some 20g rings of 1/4" or smaller, and I've been incapable of getting a hole through sufficiently small dowels. Anyone have some advice or alternate suggestions?

How to wear maille..

I have been fightingin the SCA for over 5 years, and generally use a Wisby Coat of plates, or if I am in a tourney, stainless steel Lamellar. Recently I have made a Maille shirt and am having some difficulty actually fighting in it. I thought if I removed some links from the under arms, bloused it over a belt I should have more manuverability. I usually can fight non stop for well over 45 minutes to an hour with no break what so ever, But with the Maille, I can't keep my shield arm up for more then 5 minutes. Aside from not wearing the Maille, is there anything I could consider trying different to help prevent binding? I think Binding is really what the problem is.

New to Tribe and this group

But not new to chainmail or the making of! I used to work for a friend in the SCA that made chainmail for a living. Actually had a local shop where he sold it to the public (especially his bikinis!) I was Miss November in a 1994 calendar that he did of women in chainmail. I used to sit up at Denny's until 4 or 5 in the morning, knitting "bolts" of chainmail for him to make into shirts, coifs, and anything else he decided on. We made the chainmail for the movie Hamlet with Mel Gibson, two shirts and a coif that I remember for sure.

I've been in the SCA for about 20 years now and I've made alot of chainmail. I've tried to stay away from it recently, just cause I got pretty burned out on it for a while. But, I have friends that are just learning to make it, so I've kinda gotten back into it again.

Looking forward to meeting new people here!

Hey there brand new to tribe and to chainmail. I just finished my first piece and although its just a pretty simple box chain bracelet I still like it. I have it (although its poor image quality) uploaded to my photos.

I was wondering where a good source of quality rings is. Have looked around a few sites but I feel it would be better getting some good sites that people trust rather than trusting to luck.

I am probably going to focus more on jewelry pieces rather than full armor though I have been experimenting with both. Money is quite an issue when your a college student.

My favorites from this year are in the photos section of my profile. I didn't want to offend anyone by posting them in the tribe collection because they are a bit risque. Let me know what you think.

So I am making a vest out of Bronze and Nickle Silver, Bronze 12g 5/8 and NS 14g 1/4 Japanese 4-1 weave. Now this is obviously going to be a fantasy oriented piece and I have been pondering whether I could overlap the front of the vest in a bathrobe like manner so that it could be taken on and off easily. The problem is that I haven't the faintest idea how I would fasten it. Any Suggestions?

Howdy all- I have been interested in chainmail for some time, but have never had the patience to even think i would be able to finish a piece... now i am designing a set of fire wings, and i want to add a bit of lightweigh, decorative chainmail to them. I am looking for someone either in the sf area who wouldn't mind sitting down for coffee and discussing getting started with me, or someone who would be willing to email back and forth with me during my design phaze.

Thanks in advance

tools of the trade

One of my biggest problems is finding the right tools for the project. If I am working in a smaller gauge, the more it blunts my tools. I make my own links from winding steel wire on a homemade winder, but I find the difficulty comes when I need to snip the coil to make links. I have tried tin snips, and found that they did not (no pun intended) cut it for the job. The best I have found so far have been a pair of cheap bolt-cutters from ace hardware. Anybody got any helpful hints for a nice, easy, and clean cut? I tried my dremel tool a couple times- I do not advise that method unless you want to loose an eye or finger and fry your tool (seriously, don't try it- I used a breather and safely goggles, and it still was inefficient and felt very unsafe, even if you build some sort of drill jig).

Cold connections and soldering may be used in construction as needed.
Any metal may be used. In addition, proposals for chain mail jewelry with the addition of beads, gems, and other items are encouraged.

Skill levels for projects may range from those suitable for beginners with few tools to accomplished metalsmiths.

For more information, please contact Terry Taylor via email:
terry@larkbooks.com. Please attach one or two jpeg images of your work if available.

Back in the early to mid 90s I mucked about with making mail while LARPing. Never got into anything complex, but I figure with some practice and a pattern or two I could take it up again.

I'd been kinda looking for a hobby type thing that might potentially make me some side money (rather than one that just costs me money).

So my questions to the tribe:

1. How hard is it to make useable (ie: wearable) items for Ren faire stuff or fashion items?

2. Is it possible to sell mail (without having a booth at a ren fair)?

Artists/Designers Wanted

Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

For consideration, please send an email to rp@cecpartners.com with the subject "Artist Search: [fill in what you do]." In the email, please provide your contact info (location!), company info, a website link, bio, and anything you can think of that would help us to decide whether we could work with you.

Lastly, please understand if I can't respond immediately. We know there is a tremendous need in the market for artist representation. I am opening the door just a crack on Tribe to see who is out there. We will be working as fast as we can to sort through emails and get back to people, but it will take some time to get things rolling. Even if we can't use your particular talent right away, we will keep you on file for future consideration, if it makes sense for our needs.

Regards,
Rebekah

Newbie Advice?

okie so i'm not exactally a newbie, i've been making chainmaille for bout 4 years, but i think it's still pretty low quality stuff. i make my own rings (coiling wire and cutting it) and was wondering if ayone can give me some tips to make cleaner cuts on the wire. i usually work in 14/16 gauge and just use a pair of weiss clippers (best i've found so far). also, from reading other threads, i think that many of you use the same kind of wire that i do, the fencing wire from home depot. where can you pick up copper/brass in bigger gauges? i can only find it in 18/20 gauge. would anyone be interested in teaching me to make a motorized coiling tool? i kinda have an idea, but am not mechanically inclined.

also, i was looking at theringlord.com, and found many new patterns i have not encountered before. does anyone want to explain how some of them are put together? i can usually figure it out from the pic, but i think i'm lost...

does anyone in the tribe make chainmaille for their sole income? i would like to know about your pricing scale and how/where you market yourself.

thanks for any info you are willing to give me
feel free to email me if you dont want to post on the board:
Destana@excite.com
or if anyone is in colorado, i would love to meet!!

BB&MP thx again

can anyone fix my chainmail bra??

Yes, I have a fantastic chainmail bra which I bought back in 1991 at the California, bay area Renaissance fair from a great guy back before they kicked him out in the process of creating a more "family" environment.
Anyways, a vital link broke last year at burning man and I haven't been able to wear it since. Is there anyone local who could fix it?? Of course it would require modeling it. I'm sure.
I am in Berkeley.
THANKS!!!

I put up a pic of a bikini I made back in 1988. The skirt (being used here as a cape) was made by Randolph Markham. The design was his, the knitting is mine.

The background is somebodys...someone found the pic on www.chainmail.com and edited it. As is the way with the web, the edit eventually found itself in my email inbox with the query..."is this you?"

Thought the work might appeal.
